Painting An Old Phoroptor
Because Phoroptors hold their value so well, many doctors have them re-painted when they become scratched or marred. Below are some pictures of an instrument that was about the worst we ever had to do. It was originally green, then sprayed black.
This phoroptor’s finish was so bad, we had to strip the old paint off with a sandblaster before it could be re-painted. The picture to the left is the inside of the sphere housing. The picture to the right shows the cylinder housing before all paint had been removed. The center picture shows all the castings after blasting, before they are primed and painted.
The pictures below illustrate how we remove everything from the phoroptor before painting it. The picture on the left contains the cylinder lenses and assembly, the center is the sphere housing and it’s associated dials and the picture to the right contains the pd and convergence assemblies.
The 2 pictures below show the castings after they have received several coats of paint. They are set aside to dry before re-assembly begins.
